The British Virgin Islands are located about 60 miles east of Puerto Rico and are made up of some 40 islands. The three largest are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke.

Tortola is the gateway for those taking British Virgin Islands vacations.The northern coast consists of white sandy beaches, mangos, banana and palm trees. The southern coast has rugged mountains and the BVI capital of Road Town. Beef Island lies on Tortola's eastern side and is the main airport for those arriving to the islands. Virgin Gorda means "Fat Virgin" and was named such by Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to the New World. At 10 miles long and 2 miles wide, it's the second largest of the British Virgin Islands. It has a population of approx. 1500.Its northern side is mountainous. Gorda Peak is the island's highest peak at 1370 feet.The southern part of the island is flat with boulders to be found at every turn. The best beaches are "The Baths". Spring Bay is one of the island's best beaches with white sand and clear water great for snorkeling. Trunk Bay and Savannah Bay are also popular beaches.

Jost Van Dyke occupies four rugged square miles and lies west of Tortola. White Bay and Great Harbor are the best beaches.

Other popular islands include Anegada, Marina Cay, Coopers Island, Peter Island, Mosquito Island, and Guana Island. Anegada is the most northern and isolated of the islands. Most of the island has been declared off limits to settlement and is reserved for wildlife. Marina Cay is a small 6 acre islet near Beef Island. Peter Island is a private island half of which is devoted to the yacht club. Mosquito Island was named not for the insect but for the "Moskito" tribe. This sandy 125 acre island lies just north of Virgn Gorda. Guana Island is 850 acres and is a nature preserve and wildlife sactuary. It is one of the most private hideaways in the Caribbean.
